Help for Your Stress – Inner Child Work Meditation (1 of 2) (Part 5)

Let me introduce you to our second technique for turning off your stress: Inner Child Work Meditation.

In this post, I want to introduce you to Inner Child Work Meditation. It’s our second technique in a series of 3, that’s going to help you turn off your stress. Because you deserve to find peace in your mind and body.

This is the fifth in a series of posts called “Help for Your Stress”. In them, we’ll cover some of the best mental health resources (techniques) that can turn your stress off. While I know that ultimately you’re looking for healing, getting help today to at least find relief is worth it.

So let’s talk about our second technique.

Inner Child Work Meditation

Inner Child Work is a meditation that allows you to turn off your stress gently. All while releasing the your emotions your experiencing because of the stress, without having to feel them so fully.

Compartmentalization

Inner Child Work Meditation works by using a guided visualization known as compartmentalization. Compartmentalization is just a fancy word that means: it helps you separate yourself from your stress and emotions.

The Visualization

This is done through a visualization where you witness yourself in the third person. In the meditation, you pretend to be a fly on the wall, watching a movie of yourself in real time. Or you can think of it like, you’re seeing God’s point of view.

You’ll see yourself as a separate person in the movie. That woman and all of her stress will be someone and something you see, not experience. This is the separation of compartmentalization. It’s removing your stress from you, to help you turn it off and release it easier. Let’s call that woman in the movie: “stressed you”.

Then you’ll watch as the movie begins. The part of you currently that’s ok (let’s call her: “happy you”), walks into the scene. “Happy you” will walk up to “stressed you”, hug her, hold her, and be the perfect friend she needs. (Kind of like in the movie Inside Out, where the different emotions each have their own bodies. You’ll see 2 of you here, a happy you and a stressed you).

“Happy you” will comfort “stressed you”, speaking wisdom into her life and situation. She’ll say and do everything “stressed you” needs to hear, helping you turn off your stress and release your emotions.

Like a Flashback

Think of this like a flashback, where an older version of you is struggling. The current version of you is through the pain, wise about the situation you went through. “Current you” shows up to help guide “older you” through the stress and emotions of it all.

You’re just doing it all in real time, with present day circumstances, and 2 parts of who you are today.

1 part of you is not ok, and that part of you needs someone to help you through this. But another part of you is ok, and knows that you need a hug, a listening ear and some wisdom. That “ok” part of you shows up to be there from the “stressed” part of you.

How This Actually Works

But how does this actually work?

When you visualize yourself in the third person, your brain separates your pain from your thoughts. It gives your cognitive brain the ability to think clearly, without being bogged down with all your emotions. This allows you to reason and rationalize with yourself, in turn, helping you get out of your own way. Which allows you to safely (and efficiently) turn off your stress and release your emotions (without feeling them so fully).

(Most often, your stress is an irrational response from your brain to the situation at hand. It’s you being in survival mode when you don’t need to be. This technique allows your brain to realize that truth, and shift you back into the state of peace.)

This technique is mostly designed to help with the emotions that come with your stress. When you release the emotions, you can rationalize and reason with yourself about the situation. This in turn lessens the stress and can help your brain turn it off completely.

Making it Christian

As with most of the techniques I teach and offer, I’ve fused this one with Jesus. This makes it a beautiful Christian meditation that invites the Holy Spirit into your mental health work. You can find out how right here.
